Considering the nation’s ongoing problem with prescription drug addiction, along with the risk of serious side effects from many medications, it’s no wonder many are hesitant to utilize prescription pain drugs. Others, who are concerned with their increasing usage of these medications, are curious about other methods that could help them cut back on their dependency.

There is no shame in treating legitimate pain with medications when the need arises. However, attempting non-drug methods is certain a valid avenue to explore, and is warranted in many situations.

So, what are those methods?

Talk to your doctor. Often, doctors offer prescription pain medication as a first defense, rather than a last resort. It’s simply what most patients want, when they bring their concerns to their doctor. But if you’d rather try non-drug treatments, speak up. Your physician can help you with functional advice and referrals to other services.

Keep moving. Ask your doctor whether it’s safe to keep moving, rather than confining yourself to the couch or bed. Some injuries do require rest. However, with other conditions, immobility can actually encourage more pain and stiffness to develop. In those cases it is wise to continue gentle activities, such as walking, swimming, or bicycling.

Investigate chiropractic care. Chiropractic care is immensely helpful to many with chronic pain issues, even helping some avoid prescription medications altogether. Consult with a board certified chiropractor to see if they offer treatment for your particular condition.

Relax. When we tense up in reaction to pain, this often makes the pain worse. Learn relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga.

Investigate dietary interventions. For some conditions such as arthritis, inflammation in the body increases swelling and pain. Talk to your doctor about dietary regimens to reduce inflammation, and see if those provide relief for your situation.

Make an appointment with an addiction counselor. If you do feel that you might be developing a tolerance to, or dependency upon prescription pain medications, don’t hesitate to seek addiction counseling. Addressing the situation early in its development increases your chances of an easier cessation and recovery.
